Tom Cruise est un acteur et producteur américain né le 3 juillet 1962 à Syracuse, dans l'État de New York. Issu d'une famille modeste d'origine anglaise, allemande et irlandaise, il grandit dans plusieurs villes après de nombreux déménagements, notamment au Canada, et fréquente quinze écoles en quatorze ans. Il envisage d'abord la prêtrise puis le sport, mais se tourne vers le théâtre au lycée avant de s'installer à New York puis Los Angeles à 18 ans pour devenir acteur. Il débute au cinéma en 1981 avec des rôles secondaires dans Endless Love et Taps, puis perce en 1983 avec Risky Business et The Outsiders. Sa carrière explose avec Top Gun (1986, Top Gun), qui le consacre sex-symbol. Il enchaîne avec des drames acclamés : The Color of Money (1986), Rain Man (1988), Born on the Fourth of July (1989, Né un 4 juillet) – pour lequel il remporte un Golden Globe et une nomination aux Oscars du meilleur acteur –, A Few Good Men (1992), The Firm (1993), Interview with the Vampire (1994, Entretien avec un vampire), Jerry Maguire (1996) – second Golden Globe et nomination aux Oscars –, Magnolia (1999) – troisième Golden Globe et nomination aux Oscars pour le second rôle. Producteur via Cruise/Wagner Productions, il lance la franchise Mission: Impossible en 1996 (Mission: Impossible), où il incarne Ethan Hunt et réalise ses cascades.
