Joe Gideon è un coreografo che sta allestendo un grosso spettacolo per Broadway. Professionalmente è riconosciuto il numero uno del genere e come ogni artista consapevole della propria genialità, non è mai contento: già nella scelta degli attori e delle attrici stenta a decidersi; davanti ai copioni si stempera in correzioni a non finire; poi le prove si susseguono a ripetizione; in fine, lo stesso montaggio del materiale impostato subisce interminabili ripensamenti. Ora, data la grandiosità dello spettacolo in gestazione, Joe sta subendo le pressioni dell'impresario e degli altri responsabili poiché, senza avere neppure concepite le scene finali, è molto al di fuori dei tempi di lavorazione previsti e molto al di sopra delle cifre di finanziamento.
