Conto alla rovescia (1967)
Il colonnello Chiz Stewart viene esautorato dalla missione che lo avrebbe dovuto portare come primo uomo sulla Luna. La ragione sta nel fatto che la Russia ha deciso un lancio che rischia di battere sul tempo gli americani e che a bordo ci sarà un equipaggio composto solo da civili. Tocca allora a Lewis Stegler, pilota civile e amico di Chiz, prepararsi per la missione che prevede l'invio di una capsula base in cui l'astronauta dovrà rimanere per lungo tempo in attesa della missione che andrà a recuperarlo. Lewis accetta con entusiasmo l'incarico mentre Chiz si assume il compito di addestrarlo in tempi rapidissimi sentendosi diviso tra il sentimento di amicizia e la delusione per la sostituzione.
