Dopo gli esordi in televisione e al cinema negli anni Sessanta, ha raggiunto la fama internazionale interpretando Sonny Corleone ne Il padrino di Francis Ford Coppola, ruolo che gli è valso una candidatura all'Oscar come miglior attore non protagonista.
