Una ricostruzione degli eventi che nel 1969, in Virginia, macchiarono di sangue le elezioni per la presidenza del sindacato dei minatori. Jock Yablonski è fedele al candidato Tony Boyle, ma quando questi si schiera con i proprietari di una miniera in cui sono periti ottanta uomini in circostanze non chiare, decide di candidarsi in prima persona: sentendosi minacciato nella sua leadership, il cinico e corrotto Boyle prenderà provvedimenti radicali...
