Ruth Elizabeth "Bette" Davis (nata il 5 aprile 1908 a Lowell, nel Massachusetts, e morta il 6 ottobre 1989 a Neuilly-sur-Seine, in Francia) è stata un'attrice statunitense, considerata una delle più grandi interpreti della storia del cinema americano. Dopo gli inizi a Broadway, Davis debutta al cinema nel 1931 e firma un contratto con la Warner Bros., con la quale diventa una delle principali star di Hollywood. Si distingue rapidamente per le sue interpretazioni intense e per la capacità di dare vita a personaggi complessi, determinati e spesso anticonvenzionali. Tra i suoi film più celebri figurano Schiavo d'amore (1934), Paura (1935), Jezebel - La femme fatale (1938), Ombre malesi (1940), Piccole volpi (1941), Perdutamente tua (1942) e Eva contro Eva (1950). Per Jezebel vince il suo secondo Oscar come miglior attrice, mentre Eva contro Eva le vale una delle sue numerose candidature. Davis riceve dieci candidature all'Oscar come miglior attrice, un record che mantiene per diversi decenni. Tra i suoi ruoli più memorabili degli ultimi anni figurano Che fine ha fatto Baby Jane? (1962), accanto a Joan Crawford, e Piano... piano, dolce Carlotta (1964). Continua a lavorare al cinema e in televisione fino agli anni Ottanta, partecipando anche a film come Morte sul Nilo (1978). Con una carriera durata quasi sessant'anni, Bette Davis è rimasta una delle figure più influenti dell'età d'oro di Hollywood, celebre per il suo stile recitativo diretto e intenso e per aver contribuito a ridefinire il ruolo delle protagoniste femminili nel cinema americano.
