Tony Stark ist Iron Man. Nach der Öffentlichmachung dieser Doppelidentität sonnt sich der selbstverliebte Egomane in seinem noch jungen Ruhm als eiserner Weltenretter. Die Eröffnung der eigenen Expo inszeniert er wie ein Popkonzert, den Begehrlichkeiten des US-Militärs hinsichtlich seines Kampfanzugs erteilt er bei einem Untersuchungsausschuss vor laufenden Kameras eine arrogant-zynische Absage. Erst als ihm der russische Physiker und Exsträfling Ivan Vanko bei einem Show Grand Prix in Monte Carlo die Grenzen seiner Erfindung aufzeigt, bekommt Starks ehernes Ego erste Kratzer. Dazu kommt eine von Starks lebenswichtigem Minireaktor ausgehende Paladium-Vergiftung, die, sofern er keine Ersatzquelle auftut, unweigerlich zu seinem Tod führt.
