Für die junge Christine Paley ist es die erste Nacht im Polizeidienst. Kein atemberaubender Einsatz, nur Routinearbeit beim Erkennungsdienst: Von sieben Menschen muß sie die Personalien aufnehmen und erfährt so ihre Geschichten. Leutnant Mike Brosloe führt sie durch eine höchst ungewöhnliche erste Schicht. Wenn alle Schichten so wären, könnte selbst ein Veteran nur kurze Zeit durchhalten.
