Joel Edgerton wurde am 23. Juni 1974 in Blacktown, Australien, geboren. Nach der Schule besuchte er die Nepean Drama School und wurde in seinem Heimatland vor allem durch seine Darstellung des Will in der australische Fernsehserie The Secret Life of Us bekannt. 2001 brachte ihm diese Rolle eine Nominierung für den AFI Award ein. Edgertons internationaler Durchbruch folgte mit Star Wars: Episode II – Angriff der Klonkrieger, wo er Luke Skywalkers Onkel Owen spielte und auch in Star Wars: Episode III – Die Rache der Sith war er wieder zu sehen. Joels Bruder Nash Edgerton, auch Schauspieler, diente Ewan McGregor in beiden Filmen als Stuntman. Neben einigen Theaterproduktionen, wo Joel Edgerton King Henry in Henry V, Prince Hal in Henry III and spielte, trat der Schauspieler auch in weiteren Fernsehserien wie The Three Stooges, Dossa und Joe und Saturn’s Return mit. Außerdem ist Edgerton bekannt für sein Mitwirken bei Spielfilmen wie The Thing, Zero Dark Thirty und seine Darstellung des Tom Buchanan in Baz Luhrmanns Remake von Der große Gatsby, das 2013 in den Kinos läuft.
