John Leguizamo wurde am 22. Juli 1964 in Bogotá, Kolumbien, geboren und ist ein kolumbianisch-US-amerikanischer Schauspieler, Komiker, Produzent und Autor. Seine Vorfahren stammen unter anderem aus Puerto Rico, Italien und Libanon. Im Alter von etwa fünf Jahren zog er mit seiner Familie in die USA, wo er in verschiedenen Stadtteilen von Queens, New York, aufwuchs. Nach der High School studierte er Theaterwissenschaft an der New York University und lernte die Schauspielkunst unter anderem bei Herbert Berghof. Seinen ersten Schauspieleinsatz hatte Leguizamo 1984 im Film „Mixed Blood – Die Ratten von Harlem“. Den Durchbruch erreichte er 1991 mit dem Independent-Film „Hangin’ out – 4 Homeboys Unterwegs“ sowie mit seiner Bühnenshow „Mambo Mouth“, einer Ein-Mann-Show, in der er mehrere Latino-Charaktere darstellte. Diese Show war ein großer Erfolg und gewann mehrere Auszeichnungen. Weitere bekannte Bühnenprogramme von ihm sind „Spic-O-Rama“ (1993) sowie das für zwei Tony Awards nominierte Programm von 1998. Im Film spielte Leguizamo vielseitige Rollen, darunter den Gangster Benny Blanco in „Carlito’s Way“ (1993), Luigi in „Super Mario Bros.“ (1993), Tybalt in Baz Luhrmanns „William Shakespeares Romeo + Julia“ (1996) und Toulouse-Lautrec in „Moulin Rouge!“ (2001). Er war auch als Drag-Queen in „To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar“ (1995) sowie in weiteren Filmen wie „Einsame Entscheidung“, „Spawn“ und „Land of the Dead“ zu sehen. Zudem ist er als Synchronsprecher bekannt, etwa als Stimme des Faultiers Sid in der „Ice Age“-Filmreihe. John Leguizamo war auch als Produzent und Drehbuchautor tätig. Seine Karriere ist geprägt von einem starken Engagement für die Darstellung und Förderung der Latino-Community im US-amerikanischen Film und Theater. Privat war er zweimal verheiratet und hat zwei Kinder. Er ist bis heute als vielseitiger Künstler in Theater, Film, TV und Comedy aktiv.
