Der mit dem Oscar ausgezeichnete und mit dem Emmy Award ausgezeichnete Schauspieler Woodrow Tracy Harrelson wurde am 23. Juli 1961 in Midland, Texas, als Sohn von Diane Lou (Oswald) und Charles Harrelson geboren. Er wuchs im Lebanon, Ohio, auf, wo seine Mutter herkam. Nach dem Abschluss seines Studiums der Theaterwissenschaften und der Anglistik am Hanover College absolvierte er einen kurzen Aufenthalt im New Yorker Theater. Er wurde bald als Woody in der Fernsehserie Cheers (1982) besetzt, die zu einer der beliebtesten Fernsehsendungen aller Zeiten wurde und Harrelson 1989 für seinen Auftritt einen Emmy einbrachte. Während er sich während seiner Zeit bei Cheers (1982) im Film versuchte, hob dieser Bereich seiner Karriere erst gegen Ende des Laufs der Show vollständig ab. 1991 gab Doc Hollywood (1991) ihm seine erste weit verbreitete Filmrolle, und er folgte ihr mit White Men Can't Jump (1992), Indecent Proposal (1993) und Natural Born Killers (1994). In jüngerer Zeit wurde Harrelson in No Country for Old Men (2007), Zombieland (2009), 2012 (2009) und Friends with Benefits (2011) sowie im renommierten HBO-Film Game Change (2012) gezeigt. Im Jahr 2011 schnappte sich Harrelson die begehrte Rolle des Fan-Favoriten Haymitch Abernathy in der Großleinwand-Adaption von The Hunger Games (2012), die schließlich zu einem der erfolgreichsten Filme aller Zeiten an der heimischen Kinokasse wurde. Harrelson wird diese Rolle für die Fortsetzungen, die im November 2013, 2014 und 2015 veröffentlicht werden sollen, wieder übernehmen. Harrelson erhielt zwei Oscar-Nominierungen, zuerst für seine Rolle als umstrittener Hustler-Gründer Larry Flynt in The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996) und dann für eine Rolle in The Messenger (2009). Er erhielt auch Golden Globe Nominierungen für diese beiden Teile. Im Jahr 2016 hatte er eine herausragende Rolle als weiser Lehrer im Teenagerdrama The Edge of Seventeen (2016). Harrelson war in den 80er Jahren kurz mit Nancy Simon verheiratet und heiratete später seine ehemalige Assistentin Laura Louie, mit der er drei Töchter hat.
