Stephen Rea (* 31. Oktober 1946 in Belfast, Nordirland) ist ein irischer Schauspieler. Nach einigen Jahren als Schauspieler an irischen und englischen Theatern und rund zwei Jahrzehnten in mehr oder weniger unbedeutenden Filmrollen wurde Stephen Rea 1992 über Nacht bekannt als Fergus in Neil Jordans The Crying Game, für den er 1993 als bester männlicher Hauptdarsteller für den Oscar nominiert wurde. Seine Schauspielausbildung absolvierte er an der Abbey Theatre School. In den 1970er- und 1980er-Jahren pendelte er beständig zwischen Theater, Fernsehen und Film. Am Theater gehörten Gabriel Byrne und Colm Meaney zu seinen Kollegen. Sein Filmdebüt hatte er 1970 in einer winzigen Nebenrolle in dem Horrorstreifen Der Todesschrei der Hexen mit Vincent Price. Seine erste größere Rolle verschaffte ihm Neil Jordan 1980 in dem Film Angel, der als Prequel von The Crying Game gilt. Rea und Jordan drehten inzwischen zwölf gemeinsame Filme, zuletzt Greta (2018). 1995 spielte er markant in Citizen X einen Gerichtsmediziner in einer zwölf Jahre dauernden Suche nach einem Serienmörder im Russland der 1980er Jahre. Im Jahr 2001 wirkte Rea im Filmdrama On the Edge mit. 2003 verkörperte er in Bloom den Leopold Bloom des James Joyce. In der aufwändigen Comic-Verfilmung V wie Vendetta spielte er 2006 eine der Hauptrollen als von seinem Gewissen geplagter, für ein diktatorisches Regime arbeitender Polizeibeamter.
