Dustin Lee Hoffman (nato l'8 agosto 1937) è un attore e regista statunitense. È noto per le sue versatili interpretazioni di antieroi e personaggi emotivamente vulnerabili. L'attore Robert De Niro lo ha descritto come "un attore con il volto dell'uomo comune che incarnava l'umano straziante". In giovane età Hoffman sapeva di voler studiare arte ed entrò al Conservatorio di Musica di Los Angeles; in seguito ha deciso di dedicarsi alla recitazione, per la quale si è formato alla Pasadena Playhouse di Los Angeles. La sua prima rappresentazione teatrale è stata nel 1961 A Cook for Mr. General nel ruolo di Ridzinski. Durante quel periodo è apparso in diversi ruoli da ospite in programmi televisivi come Naked City e The Defenders. Ha poi recitato nella commedia off-Broadway del 1966 Eh? dove la sua performance gli è valsa sia un Theatre World Award che un Drama Desk Award. Il suo ruolo di svolta è stato quello di Benjamin Braddock nel film iconico e acclamato dalla critica di Mike Nichols Il laureato (1967), per il quale ha ricevuto la sua prima nomination all'Oscar. Il suo ruolo successivo fu "Ratso" Rizzo in Midnight Cowboy (1969) di John Schlesinger, in cui recitò al fianco di Jon Voight; entrambi hanno ricevuto nomination all'Oscar e il film ha vinto l'Oscar per il miglior film. Ha ottenuto il successo negli anni '70 interpretando ruoli che hanno plasmato il suo mestiere di recitazione, attraversando i generi senza sforzo nel western Little Big Man (1970), nel dramma carcerario Papillon (1973), interpretando un comico controverso e innovativo in Lenny di Bob Fosse (1975), Marathon Man al fianco di Laurence Olivier (1976) e come Carl Bernstein che indaga sullo scandalo Watergate in Tutti gli uomini del presidente (1976). Nel 1979, Hoffman ha recitato nel dramma familiare Kramer vs. Kramer al fianco di Meryl Streep. Entrambi hanno ricevuto l'Oscar per le loro interpretazioni. Dopo una pausa di tre anni dal cinema, Hoffman è tornato nella commedia dello spettacolo di Sydney Pollack Tootsie (1982) su un attore in difficoltà che finge di essere una donna per ottenere un ruolo da attrice. È tornato a recitare sul palco con una performance nel 1984 come Willy Loman in Morte di un commesso viaggiatore e ha ripreso il ruolo un anno dopo in un film per la televisione che ha vinto un Primetime Emmy Award. Nel 1987 ha recitato al fianco di Warren Beatty nella commedia di Elaine May Ishtar. Ha vinto il suo secondo Oscar come miglior attore per la sua interpretazione del sapiente autistico Ray Babbitt nel film del 1988 Rain Man, con Tom Cruise. Nel 1989 è stato nominato per un Tony Award e un Drama Desk Award per aver interpretato Shylock in una rappresentazione teatrale de Il mercante di Venezia. Negli anni '90, è apparso in film come l'adattamento della commedia d'azione di Warren Beatty Dick Tracy (1990), Hook di Steven Spielberg (1991) nel ruolo di Capitan Uncino, il disastro medico Outbreak (1995), il dramma poliziesco legale Sleepers (1996) e la commedia nera satirica Wag the Dog (1997) al fianco di Robert De Niro.
