Hij werd geboren in Ballymena, County Antrim, Noord-Ierland en volgde zijn opleiding aan Saint Patrick's College, Ballymena Technical College en Queen's University Belfast. Na zijn studie verhuisde hij naar Dublin om zijn acteercarrière voort te zetten en ging hij bij het gerenommeerde Abbey Theatre werken. Begin jaren negentig verhuisde hij opnieuw naar de Verenigde Staten, waar de brede lof voor zijn optreden in Schindler's List leidde tot meer spraakmakend werk.
