Ruth Elizabeth „Bette“ Davis (* 5. April 1908 in Lowell, Massachusetts, Vereinigte Staaten; † 6. Oktober 1989 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Frankreich) war eine US-amerikanische Bühnen- und Filmschauspielerin. Bette Davis begann ihre Karriere am Theater, bevor sie 1930 nach Hollywood zog und bis 1989 in über einhundert Filmen mitspielte. Bekannt war sie vor allem für die Darstellung komplexer Charaktere. Auf dem Höhepunkt ihrer Karriere spielte Davis überwiegend in Filmdramen mit, deren Handlung sich zumeist um das tragische Schicksal der weiblichen Hauptfigur dreht. Sie war jedoch auch in Historienfilmen und in der Spätphase ihrer Karriere in Filmproduktionen, deren starke Grand-Guignol-Elemente mitunter die Grenze zum Horrorfilm streiften, zu sehen. Davis’ Markenzeichen waren die großen, ausdrucksstarken Augen, ihre direkte Art und ihre allgegenwärtigen Zigaretten. Bette Davis gewann zweimal den Oscar als Beste Hauptdarstellerin und wurde acht weitere Male für den Preis in dieser Kategorie nominiert. Sie kämpfte stets mit Vehemenz gegen die Restriktionen des Studiosystems und um gute Rollen und mehr Mitspracherechte bei der Auswahl der Filmrollen. 1936 verklagte sie, wenn auch vergeblich, in einem aufsehenerregenden Prozess ihr Filmstudio Warner Brothers. Als erste Frau stand Bette Davis der Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences als Präsidentin vor. Als erste Filmschauspielerin wurde Bette Davis 1977 mit dem Lifetime Achievement Award des American Film Institutes (AFI) geehrt. Bei einer Umfrage des AFI aus dem Jahr 1999 wurde sie auf Platz zwei der größten amerikanischen weiblichen Filmstars gewählt.
