Morgan Freeman è un attore e produttore cinematografico statunitense, candidato al premio Oscar per cinque volte e vincitore del premio per il film Million Dollar Baby. Freeman si contraddistingue per la sua voce particolare ed inconfondibile, tale da renderlo spesso una scelta ricercata come voce narrante. Per citarne due, nel 2005, è stato narratore di due grandi successi cinematografici: "La guerra dei mondi" (di Steven Spielberg) e "La marcia dei pinguini", documentario vincitore di un premio Oscar. Nato a Memphis (Tennessee, USA) il 1° giugno 1937, Morgan Freeman è l'ultimo di quattro figli di Morgan Porterfield Freeman, barbiere deceduto nel 1961 a causa di una cirrosi epatica, e di Mayme Edna, che lavorava come domestica. Durante la giovinezza si sposta frequentemente con la famiglia: da Greenwood (Mississippi) a Gary (Indiana), fino a Chicago (Illinois). Freeman fa il suo debutto come attore all'età di 9 anni, interpretando il ruolo principale in una recita scolastica. Frequenta poi la Broad Street High School, attualmente la Threadgill Elementary School, nel Mississippi. All'età di 12 anni, vince un concorso teatrale in tutto lo stato e si esibisce in un programma radiofonico con sede a Nashville, nel Tennessee. Nel 1955 decide di lasciar perdere la carriera di attore, abbandona la Jackson State University e sceglie di lavorare come meccanico nella U.S. Air Force, l'aviazione statunitense. Nei primi anni '60, Freeman si trasferisce a Los Angeles e lavora come impiegato di trascrizione al Los Angeles Community College. In questo periodo vola frequentemente anche dall'altra parte degli Stati Uniti, a New York City, dove lavora come ballerino all'Esposizione Universale del 1964. Inoltre, si reca spesso a San Francisco dove fa parte del gruppo musicale "Opera Ring". Freeman partecipa come attore teatrale a una versione riadattata di "The Royal Hunt of the Sun"; appare anche al cinema, recitando una piccola parte nel film "L'uomo del banco dei pegni" (1964). Fa il suo debutto off-Broadway nel 1967, al fianco di Viveca Lindfors in "The N****rlovers" (sull'era dei diritti civili "Freedom Riders"), prima di debuttare a Broadway nella versione completamente nera del 1968 di "Hello, Dolly!", insieme anche a Pearl Bailey e Cab Calloway. Freeman è stato sposato con Jeanette Adair Bradshaw dal 22 ottobre 1967 fino al 1979, per poi risposarsi nel 1984 con Myrna Colley-Lee, matrimonio che dura fino al 2007. Ha due figli da precedenti relazioni, ha adottato la figlia della sua prima moglie e la coppia ha avuto anche un quarto figlio. Ha una licenza di pilota privato, che ha conseguito all'età di 65 anni, e possiede e gestisce Madidi, un raffinato ristorante, e Ground Zero, un blues club, entrambi situati a Clarksdale, nel Mississippi. Ha ufficialmente aperto un secondo Ground Zero a Memphis, Tennessee, il 24 aprile 2008.
