Alan Hale Sr. (geboren als Rufus Edward Mackahan; 10. Februar 1892 – 22. Januar 1950) war ein US-amerikanischer Filmschauspieler und -regisseur, der vor allem für seine zahlreichen Nebenrollen bekannt ist, insbesondere als häufiger Partner von Errol Flynn. Er spielte außerdem in Filmen mit Lon Chaney, Wallace Beery, Douglas Fairbanks, James Cagney, Clark Gable, Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart und Ronald Reagan, um nur einige zu nennen. Hale wurde als Rufus Edward Mackahan in Washington, D.C. geboren. Er studierte Operngesang und war auch als Erfinder erfolgreich. Zu seinen Innovationen zählen ein verschiebbarer Theaterstuhl (der es den Zuschauern ermöglichte, zurückzurutschen, um neuen Zuschauern Platz zu machen, anstatt aufzustehen), der Handfeuerlöscher und fettfreie Kartoffelchips. Seine erste Filmrolle hatte er 1911 in dem Stummfilm „Der Cowboy und die Lady“. Er spielte „Little John“ im Film „Robin Hood“ von 1922 an der Seite von Douglas Fairbanks und Wallace Beery, verkörperte die Rolle 16 Jahre später erneut in „Die Abenteuer des Robin Hood“ mit Errol Flynn und Basil Rathbone und spielte sie 1950 ein weiteres Mal in „Die Schurken des Sherwood Forest“ mit John Derek als Robin Hoods Sohn – eine beispiellose Zeitspanne von 28 Jahren, in der er dieselbe Figur in Kinofilmen darstellte. Hale spielte Hugh O’Neill, Earl of Tyrone, in „Das Privatleben von Elizabeth und Essex“ (1939) und hatte eine entscheidende Konfrontation mit dem Earl of Essex, dargestellt von Flynn. Zu seinen weiteren Filmen zählen das Epos „Die Falle“ von 1922 mit Lon Chaney, „Wolkenkratzer“ von 1928 sowie „Nebel über San Francisco“ mit Bette Davis, „Miss Fanes Baby wird gestohlen“ mit Baby LeRoy und William Frawley und „Der kleine Pfarrer“ mit Katharine Hepburn. und „Es geschah in einer Nacht“ mit Clark Gable und Claudette Colbert; alle erschienen 1934; der Film „Stella Dallas“ (1937) mit Barbara Stanwyck; „High, Wide, and Handsome“ mit Irene Dunne und Dorothy Lamour; „The Fighting 69th“ mit James Cagney und Pat O'Brien; „They Drive By Night“ mit George Raft und Humphrey Bogart; „Manpower“ mit Edward G. Robinson, Marlene Dietrich und George Raft; „Virginia City“ mit Errol Flynn, Randolph Scott und Humphrey Bogart; und als der mürrische Sergeant McGee in dem Film „This Is the Army“ (1943) mit Irving Berlin. Er spielte außerdem an der Seite von Errol Flynn und Olivia de Havilland in dem erfolgreichen Western „Dodge City“ (1939), wo er den etwas begriffsstutzigen, aber liebenswerten und komischen Rusty Hart verkörperte, den Gehilfen von Flynns Figur, Sheriff Wade Hatton. Hale spielte in 13 Filmen an der Seite von Errol Flynn. In den 1920er- und 1930er-Jahren führte Hale bei acht Filmen Regie und wirkte in 235 Kinofilmen mit.
